Abstract The method of a rate evaluation of lubricant layers’ anisotropy induced by stationary shear is proposed. The intensity of a plane-polarized radiations’ light flux that permeated through the lubricating layer with triboactive mesogenic components is selected as a quantitative parameter. Various optical responses of the tribosystem which depend on thickness and composition of the layer of lubricating material with mesogenic components are demonstrated. The described approach provides an interpretation of the experimental data obtained by the developed polarizing tribometry method. The method is based on the analysis of laser radiation that permeated through the lubricating layer which contains anisometrical molecules forming epitropic liquid crystalline layers on the friction surfaces.
