Abstract The optical transmission of a monochromatic laser beam passing through an individual domain of a nematic liquid crystal as well as through the ensemble of domains formed by the polycarbonate surface with the use of electric and magnetic fields is studied. Interference effects depending on the direction of polarization of light relative to the disclination line of a separate domain are observed. In the crossed electric and magnetic fields applied to the domain ensemble, the disappearance of the interference extrema are observed with increasing of magnetic field. The results are explained in terms of gradient optics. Comparison of magnetic and electrical coherence length with the coherence length of the domain is performed.
