Abstract The article is dedicated to the international conference, the "10th Chistya-kov’s Readings", which was held in Ivanovo in May 2024. The 10th Chis-tyakov’s Readings were being held on the occasion of two significant anni-versaries: the 95th anniversary of the birth of Prof. Igor Grigorievich Chistyakov, an outstanding scientist and organiser of science in the field of liq-uid crystals, and the 60th anniversary of of the first Laboratory of Liquid Crystals and Polymers in the USSR at the Ivanovo State Pedagogical Insti-tute founded in 1964. The article provides a detailed account of the signifi-cant milestones and developments in the life of I. G. Chistyakov. Specific attention is paid to his role in the revitalisation of liquid crystal research in the USSR during the 1960s. In the scientific field, the contribution of I. G. Chistyakov is associated with the development of structural studies of liq-uid crystals, an interdisciplinary approach to the synthesis, the study of structure and properties of liquid crystalline compounds, and the determina-tion of their role in prebiotic synthesis and the functioning of biological ob-jects. From a scientific and organizational perspective, I. G. Chistyakov played a pivotal role in the establishment of two research laboratories spe-cialising in liquid crystals: the first was set up at the Ivanovo Pedagogical Institute in 1964, while the second was established at the ICAN USSR in Moscow in 1970. He organized five All-Union conferences on liquid crys-tals in Ivanovo, created a scientific school (8 doctors and 25 candidates of science). His publication of the first monograph in the USSR entitled “Liq-uid Crystals” (1966), gave impetus to the study of liquid crystals not only in Russia, but also in other countries of the Union. The inventive work of I. G. Chistyakov is acknowledged, along with the main directions of practical application of liquid crystals, which were developed under his guidance.
