Abstract
The synthesis and physicochemical properties of anisotropic functional biphenyl derivatives have been investigated. The biphenyl derivatives were obtained from commercially available 4',4-diphenyldicarboxylic acid, 4'-hydroxy-4-biphenylcarboxylic acid, 4'-hydroxy-4-cyanobiphenyl, 4'-pentyl-3'-chloro-4-hydroxybiphenyl using S-(–)-octan-2-ol, L-(–)-2-hydroxypropanoic (lactic) and 6-bromohexanoic acids. It was found that the synthesized compounds are able to interact specifically with nanoparticles and can be successfully used as effective components of anisotropic nanosized composite materials.

Keywords: functional derivatives of biphenyl, anisotropic nanocomposites, physico-chemical properties of nanomaterials
