Abstract
A biographical essay of the famous French physicist-theoretician, Nobel Prize winner, Pierre-Gilles de Gennes is given in this article. The history of creation by this scientist of the group for investigation of liquid crystals at the University of Orsay is described, and the analysis of de Gennes’ impact on the physics of these substances is given.
