Abstract The effect of amino acid (glycine) on mesomorphic properties of the sodium dodecyl sulfate – glycine – water system, wherein sodium dodecylsulphate was used as a material simulating liquid crystal structure of a biological membrane, was established. The data on the interaction energy of sodium dodecyl sulfate with water and glycine, obtained by quantum-chemical modeling, allowed to theoretically justify a shift in the formation of hexagonal lyomesophase to lower concentrations of the surfactant of the studied ternary system compared with the binary system of sodium alkylsulfate – water. Since the formation of complexes between surfactants and amino acids is similar to the micellar solubility, the understanding of such processes is important in biology and different areas of potential practical applications of surfactants, such as making detergents, pharmaceuticals, solubilization and drug delivery.
