Abstract
This article is dedicated to the history of studies of the universal phenomenon of percolation. The examples of percolation in different natural and social processes are given. Considerable attention is paid to the works on percolation by the famous French physicist, Nobel Prize Laureate, P.-G. de Gennnes.
