Abstract The retention of xylene, cresol, methylanisol, toluidine and lutidine isomers by 4-[4-cyanophenyl]-N-[4-(6-hydroxyhexyloxy)benziliden]aniline (I) and 4-cyanophenyl ester of 4-[4'-(2-hydroxyethyloxy)phenylazo]cinnamic acid (II) has been studied by gas chromatogra-phy. The thermodynamic interpretation of the nematic phase structural selectivity was proposed.
