Abstract
4-Alkoxybenzaldehydes were obtained by alkylation of 4-oxybenzaldehyde with bromoalkanes. They were condensed with malonic acid to form four 4-n-alkoxycynnamic acids. In this case the fourteenth homologue was synthesized for the first time. Liquid crystalline properties of these acids have been studied using optical polarizing microscopy. It was established, that the obtained compounds show enantiotropic mesomorphism of the smectic type (SmC).
