Abstract The electric birefringence (Kerr effect) dynamics in the melt of a comb-like polymer with an acrylate main chain and mesogenic cyanobiphenyl side groups was investigated above smectic – isotropic phase transition temperature. For the first time it was found that in smectic phase the temperature dependence of relaxation times had no classic character and the presence of the of relaxation times spectrum was established.
