Abstract The article deals with the methods and the techniques of optical studies in polarized parallel and convergent light on the basis of the university optics laboratory of the Department of General and Theoretical Physics, Faculty of Physics, Ivanovo State University. These studies allow students to acquire the knowledge and skills of work with professional equipment at the early stages of studies in the higher school. The use of conoscopic methods of sensing of crystalline and liquid crystal samples indicatrix was proposed. A diffraction method of determination of Mallyar constant was suggested. Low-melting temperature compounds with different structures possessing liquid crystal state and corresponding optical properties at different temperatures were chosen as study objects.
Keywords: optical research, polarizing microscope, conoscopic figures, Mallyar constant, anisotropic material
