Abstract Dimerization of azo dyes molecules used for photoorientation of liquid crystals is considered. The values of thermodynamic potentials of this process are found. A probability of the formation of dye molecules dimers is evaluated. The effect of dimerization on polar and azimuthal anchoring energy of LC – azo dye system is shown. The bonds conjugation transfer via intermolecular hydrogen bond is revealed and the anisotropy of polarizability of the hydrogen bond is evaluated.
