Orientational and Optical Properties of Liquid Crystal Domains Bounded by Central Orienting and Surrounding Non-Orienting Surfaces

Abstract Spherical and cylindrical nematic liquid crystals domains with fixed boundary conditions are investigated. The domain core surface orients the LC vertically, while the surrounding surface has no orienting effect. A new method of the domain’s phase retardation difference determination is described as well as its optical anisotropy and dimensional characteristics. This new method is also applicable for polymer–LC systems.
