Rod-Like Mesogenes with Three Aromatic Rings and Chiral Terminal Substituent

Abstract Six rod-like liquid crystalline compounds containing the three aromatic rings and (S)-2-methyl-1-buthyloxy-chiral terminal group have been synthesized. The chemical structures of the obtained compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The polarizability and dipole moments of molecules as well as their structures were calculated with the help of quantum chemical methods (DFT B3LYP). Phase transition temperatures and enthalpies were determined by differential scanning calorimetry. The effects of the molecule structure on the mesomorphic properties have been studied and discussed.
