Periodic Distortions of Smectic Liquid Cristal Layers in Magnetic and Electric Fields

Abstract The possibility of appearance of periodic distortions in smectic layers in external intersecting magnetic and electric fields was investigated. A theoretical model of behavior of a smectic liquid crystal (LC) limited by two semi-infinite plates with a weak anchoring energy at boundaries was considered. In this model, the magnetic field directed along sample layers, the electric field directed at angle to x-axis in xOz-plane. A relation for critical values of the magnetic and electric fields, for which the appearance of periodic distortions of smectic layers is possible was obtained.
