Abstract
The article reflects the formation of I. G. Chistyakov as a scientist and gives his biographic data. The contribution of I. G. Chistyakov to the development of physical (especially structural) methods for studying liquid crystals is presented. His role in the revival and development of this area of research in the USSR is described: the creation of two laboratories to study the structure and properties of mesogenic materials (1964 – Ivanovo, 1970 – Moscow), the organization of six All-Union conferences on liquid crystal subject, the training of highly qualified specialists in the field of liquid crystals, the publication of the first in the USSR monograph «Liquid crystals» and the publication of popular scientific works. The main directions of the works of I. G. Chistyakov on the practical application of liquid crystals are indicated.
