Orientational Transitions in Electric or Magnetic Field in Two-Layer Nematic Structures Induced by Polymer Surface

Abstract Two-layer structures of a nematic liquid crystal were experimentally studied in cells with interfacial polycarbonate surfaces under orientational transitions from planar- and homeotropic-domain configurations to the homogeneous homeotropic state. Director reorientation was initiated by electric or magnetic fields. The effective order parameter was used to describe the liquid crystal alignment in two-layer structure. Comparison with a model based on the elasticity theory of liquid crystals was carried out.
