Abstract
The effect of amino acid (alanine) and oligopeptides (glycylglycine, glycylglycylglycine and alanylalanine) on the formation of lyotropic hexagonal mesophase in aqueous solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was studied. For the first time, it was established that for the «SDS – oligopeptide – water» ternary systems there is a shift of the hexagonal mesophase to a region of lower SDS concentrations compared to the «SDS – water» binary system.
For the three-component system with alanine, such effect was not observed. The data were interpreted on the basis of ideas about the effect of hydrophilic-lipophilic balance on the curvature of the micelle surface. Quantum-chemical calculations performed for the «SDS – alanine – water» ternary system confirm that, while the three components (SDS, water and alanine) coexist in the system, the binding energy of alanine with the polar group of SDS only slightly exceeds the one of SDS with water.
